Know about Child Sexual Abuse by himabinduchitta Know about Child Sexual Abuse by himabinduchitta
What is Child Sexual Abuse?
Child Sexual Abuse is the use of a child for sexual gratification by an older or more powerful person. The offender is usually an adult, but could also be a more powerful child. Both girls and boys are vulnerable. Besides being a public health concern, it is a crime punishable by law.

Types of Child Sexual Abuse
Child Sexual Abuse includes the following Touching and Non-Touching Behaviors (but need not be limited only to these acts)

Touching behaviors include
-Fondling a child's body for sexual pleasure
-Kissing a child with sexual undertones/inclinations.
-Rubbing genitals against a child's body.
-Sexually touching a child's body, and specifically private parts (breasts and genitals). Includes encouraging or forcing a child to do likewise.
-Making a child touch someone else's genitals, or playing sexual ("pants-down") games.
-Encouraging or forcing a child to masturbate, with the child as either a participant or observer.
-Encouraging or forcing a child to perform oral sex (mouth-to-genital contact on or by the child)
-Inserting objects or body parts (like fingers, tongue or penis) inside the vagina, mouth, or anus of a child; includes attempts of these acts.

Non-touching behaviors include
-Encouraging a child to watch or hear sexual acts either in person or lowering the bars of privacy
-Looking at a child sexually
-Exposing one's private body parts to a child (exhibitionism)
-Watching a child in a state of nudity, such as while undressing, using the bathroom, with or without the child's knowledge (voyeurism)
-An adult making suggestive comments to the child that are sexual in nature. Commenting on the sexual development of a child
-Encouraging or forcing a child to read/watch pornography, giving pornographic material or using the child in pornography

Myth: Children are rarely abused in India, as the Indian socio-cultural system inherently does not allow for its children to be sexually abused.
Fact: Statistical data from available research and reported incidents (from children and adult survivors) clearly indicates that child sexual abuse is a widespread problem affecting an extremely large number of children in the country.

Myth: Child sexual abuse occurs mostly in poor, illiterate families.
Fact: Child sexual abuse occurs in all social and economic classes of society.

Myth: Sexual abuse generally occurs in surroundings unfamiliar to the child.
Fact: Most children are sexually abused inside their own homes. In a predominant number of cases, abusers have the trust of children and their families and access to their homes.

Myth: Only girls are the victims of child sexual abuse.
Fact: Both girls and boys are victims.

Myth: Children with disability (differently able children) cannot be sexually abused as the abusers either find them sexually unattractive, or feel sorry for them.
Fact: All children are vulnerable to sexual abuse. Research has proven that differently able children are in fact more likely to be abused because of their increased vulnerabilities.

Myth: Children lie and make up stories about sexual abuse.
Fact: Children do not lie or weave stories about being sexually abused. The pressure to remain silent to uphold distorted concepts of honor and respect is immense. Also, children in our society are kept ignorant of sex and the possibility of abuse. Given these two facts the child is not lying when he/she relates an incident of sexual abuse.

Myth: Often precocious children provoke sexual abuse by their "seductive" behavior.
Fact: Children can never initiate sexual abuse. Terming a child's behavior "seductive" is an adult justification, projection and misinterpretation.

Myth: Children are usually abused by strangers.
Fact: The majority of abusers are known to the child and are often in positions of trust and power vis--vis the child. Example: Family, relatives, neighbours, teachers etc.

Myth: People who sexually abuse are mentally ill or "sick".
Fact: Abusers are seldom mentally ill; on the contrary they are "regular" people who lead "routine" lives

Myth: Women do not sexually abuse children.
Fact: Though most of abusers are men, a small number of women abuse children sexually.

Myth: Child sexual abuse is usually accompanied by physical violence.
Fact: In most reported cases the abuser is not physically violent but uses emotional manipulation to coerce the victim.

Myth: Somebody in the family usually knows the child is being sexually abused.
Fact: Usually nobody is aware that the child is being sexually abused.

Myth: A child should be encouraged to forget about the abuse, as there are no harmful effects of child sexual abuse.
Fact: Child sexual abuse usually has harmful effects and can lead to behavioral, emotional, physical and interpersonal problems.

Myth: Reporting of child sexual abuse can cause more harm than good.
Fact: If child sexual abuse is not reported then the same abuser may harm other children or may target the same child again.

Myth: Abuse is usually a single isolated incident.
Fact: There is very often a pattern to abuser's behaviour. They usually repeat their behaviour and with many children as well.

Myth: Only adolescent children get abused.
Fact: Children of any age can be abused. Reported incidents show that even infants have been sexually abused.

Mostly good work, but here is some criticism.

Your definitions are way to loose.

Here are some examples:

"Kissing a child with sexual undertones/inclinations."

Decided how, by who? Any parent who kiss their kids good night with a peck on the forehead can be found guilty of this.

"Sexually touching a child's body, and specifically private parts (breasts and genitals)"

Again, decided how, by whom? Any parent who has bathed or washed their own child could fall under this. If you have a 6 year old daughter (usually the age when parents stop bathing their kids) and you wash her torso you are eligible for this accusation because you touched her breasts. You do not specify the development level of the child's body, only that touching a "child" - that is anyone younger than 18 - is abuse by a standard called "Sexually touching." What's the definition of that term?

"Inserting objects or body parts (like fingers, tongue or penis) inside the vagina, mouth, or anus of a child; includes attempts of these acts."

So technically anyone who has taken a kid's temperature with an anal thermometer - or just one that goes in the mouth - can count.

"Looking at a child sexually"

This is your worst offender yet. How in the hell can anyone decide what "Looking at a child *SEXUALLY* is even done? How do you know? Who can tell? Anyone who has watched their kid at any time, especially when washing said child or tucking the kid in bed to sleep can count.

"Exposing one's private body parts to a child (exhibitionism)"

In other words, if you ever dare let your kid see you naked under any conditions, like the above-mentioned taking a bath and washing your kid at the same time, you are guilty of child abuse. Wow, just wow.

"Watching a child in a state of nudity, such as while undressing, using the bathroom..."

Once again covers anyone who has ever raised their own kid. Helping your kid to dress/undress in the morning/evening or before or after a bath, or during it... this definition is so wide it's meaningless.

"Commenting on the sexual development of a child"

Never ever dare to ask or even explain sexuality to your own kids *EVER*, it will label you an abuser, even if they ever ask you. I suppose you want the children to learn about anatomy and/or sexuality from a government-run school system then? Or is complete ignorance and/or abstinence the only things ever to be told to the kids?

Your list is mostly good, but many of these need some work to cut down on how extremely generalized and widely open to interpretation they are. By these standards, practically every parent ever is a child abuser.

I agree with all of this except that I think the stats are under-reported and the issue is even more widespread than we know, which is of course not a fault of your article but of society, and I have to add a qualifier to this part:

Quote: "Myth: Children lie and make up stories about sexual abuse. Fact: Children do not lie or weave stories about being sexually abused. The pressure to remain silent to uphold distorted concepts of honor and respect is immense. Also, children in our society are kept ignorant of sex and the possibility of abuse. Given these two facts the child is not lying when he/she relates an incident of sexual abuse."

This is basically true in most cases but there are exceptions where a child who is being abused or being exposed to abuse will name someone they trust, or don't feel threatened by, as their abuser when trying to seek help, even though that person may not be abusing them and may never have abused them.

They may name an innocent person because they are threatened by the one who is actually abusing them. Sometimes adult rape and abuse victims will do the same.

So when a child reports sexual abuse but the evidence point to the child's named abuser not being guilty, people need to not call the child a liar and brand them for life, but look around to find the true abuser. You see articles in the news sometimes where a child has named an abuser who is then proven to have never been alone with them or otherwise had the opportunity, and unfortunately then people tend to turn on the child instead of looking deeper into the issue. They are relating real experiences, but changing names to protect themselves, as the abusers coach them to, and in doing so they inadvertently protect the abusers. It's part of the manipulation. It's not the most common thing but it does happen and it's something to be aware of. Many children do tell on their abusers but are then called liars and stigmatized for it.

Asides from that minor addition your article is correct to the best of my knowledge. This is a serious issue that needs more public awareness, far too many think it's rare, but it's not. Keep up the good work.

You people need to worry about the real thing and put a stop to it instead of attacking a teenager for drawing a picture of an anime little boy or girl in sexual situations.

Why are only the girls sexually abused?

Wtf is wrong with people?!
animedisneyluver809 Featured By Owner Oct 10, 2013
It's because women are seen as less and are easier targets, and the abusers are mostly male. Horrible as it sounds, it's true :(

Hi there, I love this. It's such a great resource picture to raise awareness. And that brings me to a question. Since you are credited in this picture, would it be all right if I posted this on my Facebook page? Not my personal page but one I made to raise awareness for this very subject. I would give extra credit in the description if desired.

its nice but surely useless as i figured. well in my country (germany) i can do something but it doesnt happen in our street or so because we pretty much are only families on our street and everyone knows everyone but does not really trust them and so we all watch over the children. if they fight we 100% know, if they being abused we 100% know. children and families sticking together, plus the police is very active here and controlls everything. even talking to the kids there and asking. but i figured in USA it isnt like that and no one cares there.

i tried to contact the police in USA and send them a mail. with the persons information and the reason. it was a sick man. he commented a video on youtube about inces victims. not only he sleeps with his own mother and sister (but they both seems to want it so i dont care about that part) but he also told there that he wants to sleep with the two little girls of the sister (who is married to a man while cheating on him with her brother AND she allows her brother to do it and planned it with him). those two girls are very young under 13 years old must they be because he plans on touching them on that age he said there. plus i got informet by a friend of youtube that he e-mailed her that he already seduced little girls on helloween, in princess outfits.

now its 1 months since i reported it with a friend to youtube, the USA police and here the police. but german police tried but couldnt do anything its the job of the USA police but they dont care. youtube dont care. the poeple on youtube dont care. no one cared. i started to not care to. not my country, not my problem. but serious if its the style of USA why wonder why no ones likes that country?

all the comments are disgusting but most the one of mukaikof on page 8 and 9 and then it goes on to 7-4 or so with his plans for the daughsters of the sister. he is wiritting with a friend there username is CLionQueen. many other joined him on that she was basically fighting alone there and either they were on his side or ignored him.
there see the oh so great america!! where can comment stuff like that and nothing will happen. yay for trying to help or change. no wonder most dont give a damn anymore! even if you try you wont change a thing!

i love the messige, i think the saddest part about all this is the fact so much of it happens all around us, and that at any given moment while your walking donw the street and you see a group of school kids playing around and haveing fun whiel waiting for the bus to school, one of those kids could be victem to somthing so terrible the moment they get home :( when i was realy young in 1st grade (i did kindergarden twice so i was a year older) i had a friend who had an abusive fatehr both sexualy and violently. she would tell me what happened and id try to help her as best as i could at the time but the moment i tried to talk to my aunt she sayed i was lieing and did not know what i was talking about, sadly in 3rd grade i was proved correct when she ended up dieing and it still maeks me angry that every person i had tried to tell about what was happening to her told me i had no clue what i was talking about...

Myth: Someone who sexual abuses is older, and the one targeted is younger.
Fact: You can be sexual abused by a peer
SomeAssemblyNeeded Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2011
True I know someone it happened to. Actually I know a few people it happened to, it's pretty common that a child who is sexually abused will repeat the behavior on other children. It's often not malicious as the children doing it don't realize what they're doing, but sometimes obviously is.

Fact: Most people who abuse children sexually, emotionally, and physically are drunk or lonely men.
SomeAssemblyNeeded Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2011
Not really, they're often fathers in happy marriages who don't drink all that much. Although I'm sure alcohol would help fuel the problem. People just have to be careful not to make such assumptions because they're inaccurate.

Always looking for support from parents like you! Really, parents are usually in the best position to prevent CSA if only they keep their eyes and ears open. But sadly most parents prefer to pretend that CSA doesnt exist or can easily be forgotten by their kids. Thank you for reading and understanding how important this is, and here's hoping you encourage a lot more people to find out about CSA!
SomeAssemblyNeeded Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2011
Also a parent and faved this, you are correct, parents are in the best position to stop this abuse, but I often see other parents act like this doesn't exist. I find the common reasons people pretend CSA doesn't exist is to A. get babysitters, it's difficult to do anything if you only have one or two trusted babysitters, so hey, let everyone mind your little one! and B. it's someone they love who is the abuser and it's too difficult to face reality/rare their children alone. They're basically putting their needs ahead of their childrens safety.

Having said that I understand things can be more complicated and indeed more difficult, and I'm certainly not placing blame on parents. I know it's the most horrific thing to find out your child has been abused, so I do not mean to place blame. I just wish people were more realistic in the first place about just how careful you have to be in protecting your child.

And sorry I know the original comment is years old haha

hi, and sorry for the late reply. as you can see on the poster, the image is someone else's original artwork. You can try seeking permission from that person ( as far as the image is concerned.

As for the text, do feel free to use it on your site. I could not open the link you sent because of a silly firewall at my college. But the group I am part of, Sound of Silence, welcomes and supports any effort that increases awareness of CSA. Do note that most of that text has been developed by Tulir ( and though its not copyrighted, it would be nice if you could acknowledge them.

Good luck in your efforts!
